18th Sep 2017

Edinburgh’s Christmas is one of the most popular Christmas celebrations in the UK. 2017 will see the biggest, brightest and best programme of events and entertainment so far! Opening on 17 November, this year the celebrations expand across the city from East to West, North to South and into community hubs outside the city centre.

New for 2017

The Ice Adventure - A Journey Through Frozen Scotland
This arctic installation at the west end of George Street is an immersive walk-through experience filled with spectacular ice and snow sculptures to take your breath away. Take a tour of Scotland with life-like ice sculptures of Vikings, fairies and Kelpies, Highland cows, eagles and Dolly the Sheep, Robert the Bruce, Mary Queen of Scots and Greyfriars Bobby, and of course the Loch Ness Monster! Supported by Shackleton Whisky, this attraction will also feature an ice bar.

Advent Calendar
Edinburgh’s very own, free to access giant Advent Calendar will be projected onto General Register House with 25 glimpses of Edinburgh Winters from years gone-by one revealed each day. Archive of the city dating back to the 1700s will be animated and set to a soundscape reflective of that year. Edinburgh’s Giant Advent Calendar will be visible on General Register House at varying times from 5pm to 10pm every day, from 1 - 25 December.

The Festival Square Spiegeltent is back in Festival Square on Lothian Road, this year featuring spectacular headline show La Clique Noël. This very special seasonal treat sees the outrageous and unforgettable theatrical phenomenon coming home to Edinburgh for Christmas, featuring a host of performers including Heather Holliday (LIMBO) and Bernadette Byrne (East End Cabaret). For family audiences, Nick Sharratt’s books are brought to life with Shark in the Park, and family favourite Baby Loves Disco gives the little ones their chance to get their festive groove on.

Working in partnership once again with fellow theatres in Edinburgh’s West End, Christmas on Stage presents some of the best Christmas entertainment around town! The Traverse Theatre brings classic fairytale Cinderella and pitch-black comedy How to Disappear, while The Lyceum Theatre premieres The Arabian Nights

Much Loved Rides, Attractions and Events

The celebrations commence with Light Night, our free, big Christmas lights switch-on event, on Sunday 19 November. This year Light Night will again be hosted by Forth One DJ Arlene Stuart and will showcase the Scotland’s best amateur choirs and dance groups, including Little Voices Big Stars, All Blacks and Trinity Primary School.

For the thrill seekers, the Big Wheel and the Star Flyer rides are back at East Princes St Gardens, and the Santa Train chugs back into Santa Land along with a host of riders for younger children.

And finally, he’s been getting ready all year! Santa is back and ready to receive visitors in his magical festive Grotto, in a new home on George St.
