Edinburgh’s Christmas: full programme announced for 2016/2017!
15th Sep 2016
Edinburgh’s Christmas is back from 18 November 2016 – 7 January 2017, promising a bigger and better festive season than ever before! Plus, EH postcode holders will again receive a 20% discount on all shows, rides and attractions.
Edinburgh’s Christmas expands into the West End
This year’s theatre programme for Edinburgh’s Christmas played out in the new Festival Square Theatre promises magic, music and much more! The new Festival Square Theatre pops up on 18 November outside the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa on Lothian Road with a dazzling revival of Clarke Peters’ West End and Broadway hit, Five Guys Named Moe, featuring songs from jazz legend Louis Jordan performed on stage by a live band. Morgan and West, a family favourite, bring Morgan and West’s A (Sort of) Christmas Carol to delight audiences of all ages. They take on Charles Dickens’ timeless classic for ages 5+, with some magical twists.
The Street of Light returns in a new location!
Also moving to the West End, the Street of Light has its highly anticipated return in a new location on the west end of George Street. Opening on 20 November as part of Light Night, the Street of Light will run until 24 December with performances at 6pm & 8pm, illuminating the west end of George Street in a canopy of light, synchronised to music from local choirs and bands including the Edinburgh Festival Chorus, Royal Scottish National Orchestra Junior Chorus, fiddle music from the Highlands with Blazin’ Fiddles and Scotland’s very own bhangra group, Tigerstyle. More information on how to visit the Street of Light will be available soon.
Standard Life: 10,000 free tickets to ice skating for Edinburgh’s schoolchildren
As part of a special new partnership, Standard Life and Edinburgh’s Christmas are offering 10,000 free tickets to the St. Andrew Square Ice Rink to Edinburgh’s school children. All school children in Edinburgh are eligible for free tickets across every day of Edinburgh’s Christmas from 18 November 2016 to 7 January 2017, and tickets will be available to book from 11 October. More information.
Rides and Attractions
There are also a host of spectacular rides and attractions for the whole family as part of this year’s season. The 60m Star Flyer and the Big Wheel return to East Princes St Gardens, and the circular ice rink to St Andrew Square. For the kids, Santa Land includes the Santa Train, Christmas Tree Maze, rides for the wee ones, and the chance to meet the man himself in Santa’s Grotto!
There are two fantastic festive markets this year: the European Christmas Market in East Princes St Gardens, opening 19 November – 7 January, and the Scottish Market at George Street open from 26 November – 24 December.
Other Free Events
In addition to the Street of Light, the free events at Edinburgh’s Christmas 2016/2017 include the big Christmas lights switch-on, Light Night (20 November), 24 Doors of Advent (1 – 24 December) and Winter Windows (more info on these fantastic events to follow soon!).
