The Monument was erected to hold a white marble statue of Scotland's National Bar Robert Burn, which was later removed. The design by Thomas Hamilton, who had designed the Alloway Monument and the Royal High School Edinburgh. It's based on a Gredcian temple to Lysicates. The Copola is a copy from the temple in Athens, on the roof are three Griffins supporting a tripod. Round the outside there are twelve pillars and carved Lyres, and twelve Lion heads.
